Located between the community of McLean and the town of Vienna, Tyson’s is considered an "edge city,” also known as a suburban business district. The influx of tech companies to the area brought many new office buildings, condos and super malls to the landscape. At one point, Tysons had 46 million square feet of office and retail space, making it an outlier in Northern Virginia.
While Tyson’s is widely known as a commercial hub, the area is also known for its proximity to several stellar hiking and biking trails, Great Falls, Difficult Run and Scott’s Run being among the most popular. Nearby activities include visiting Meadowlark Botanical Gardens for your fix of lush green scenery in the middle of Virginia, stop into local brewpub, Caboose Tavern for a drink and a bite, or grab your blanket and catch an outdoor show at Wolf Trap, the only U.S. National Park devoted to the performing arts.
Back in the 1950’s Tyson’s was a quiet rural intersection flanked by a few small stores, but big changes were on the horizon. In the 1960s came the establishment of Fairfax Hospital and Dulles International Airport and the additions of the Route 7 and the Route 123 interchanges. The area quickly transitioned from a sleepy country crossroads to a bustling commercial corridor just outside of the nation’s capital.
The Capital Beltway runs north to south through part of Tyson’s, which can lead to congestion and traffic issues at times. But with your choice of Routes 7, 66, 123, 267 and 495, there’s no shortage of roadways to get you where you want to go. The recent growth of Tyson’s encouraged the increasing need for the Silver Line to be completed, and it now offers countless connections to its surrounding neighborhoods and downtown DC.
